BeeKeeping

KASIL has hives distributed all over the ten regions of Ghana. The diversity of the flora of Ghana is blended in the richness of the multifloral honey produced. The Northern Region and Brong-Ahafo Regions produce most of the honey. The climate of Ghana enables the African honey bees to produce honey all year round with average temperatures between 21 °C and 28°C.

Forests cover about one-third of the total surface area of Ghana making timber one of the major exports. KASIL recognises forest honey as a potential forestry resource to supplement the income of subsistence farmers. Some of the crops grown within the forests of Ghana are cocoa, oil palm and rubber. Local farmers also grow a variety of vegetables including tomato, onion, egg plant and pepper. Mango, avocado pear and cashew are a few of the fruits whose flowers provide pollen and nectar for the bees in Ghana.

With all these flowers available from plants of fruits, vegetables, weeds and wild herbs, honey from Ghana has a truly remarkable and mind-blowing taste and beekeeping is a profession, hobby and a wonderful adventure.
